Software Reviews of TurboTax Premier Federal + State 2007 [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Eventually does the job, but crashes!!! Summary: 2 StarsI've used TurboTax to do my taxes for the last 5 years at least. My experience has been mostly great. It was always pretty easy to use and I always did my taxes about 3 times to make sure I wasn't making mistakes. To this day, I've never had an IRS issue that was caused by TurboTax.
Efiling is more expensive now. And Version 2007 crashes a lot. I first received a Free CD from Intuit that let me do my taxes, but wouldnt let me print or file unless I paid. I thought, sweet, I wont have to go shopping. Then it started crashing. So hard that it wouldnt run anymore. "encountered an error" and could not start. So I thought, oh well, I'll just order one from Amazon. Which I did. And I installed it and it worked. For awhile. I used it to do my brother and sister's taxes before it crashed again. A search on the TurboTax site revealed a fix. Uninstall .NET and install the latest version from Microsoft. I did that. It worked once and crashed again. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it started working again. So I did my taxes but didnt file due to some retirement forms I needed. I saved it, printed them out for my records and exited. That was last night. Today, I tried to start it and it's telling me "TurboTax encountereed an error..." and crashes. I have had it with the piece of $h1t. I'm going to reinstall it which usually fixes the problems. I'll finish my tax return and paper mail my taxes because I AM NOT GIVING INTUIT ANOTHER DIME OF MY MONEY!
Given that there are few options out there for tax prep software, it's not going to be fun hunting for something better. I hope if enough people leave these guys, they'll realize even if they have a virtual monopoly, they need to make their software work better. Check out reviews for their latest version of Quicken. It is riddled with bugs too. Quality control must be sorely lacking in all their products...
Customer Review: Premier is so buggy and you can never finish filing your tax Summary: 1 StarsI have been using Turbo tax for more than 10 years. I used to be a very happy user until this year. First of all, it only import sale information without including cost information. Second, sometimes after entering the cost information, it duplicates itself again and again. For one sale in investment, it might show more than 3 entries for the same investment transaction. If you try to correct it by deleting that entry, it got even worse. Not only deleting a completely non-related entry, it also wiped out some other cost information you just entered. The more you try to correct it, the worse it gets. I have no idea whether it's because I have too many transactions going for this year. It's truely painful. At the end, I still can't finish filing my tax with turbo tax but giving up. I have to try to purchase a different software and re-enter as well as re-calculate everything again. I don't know if I still dare to use it again. This is the worst tax filing experience I have ever had.TurboTax Premier Federal + State 2007
Customer Review: they slipped this year Summary: 3 StarsAlways depended on turbotax but this year they slipped. Took several times to get thru to them for updateing... must have been alot of folks trying at the same time. Several steps were confusing. Usually they explain all very well but this time I was stuck on what to do next. After several days I got it to work.
I've used turbo for years but next time I'll check out other software.
Customer Review: Premier not worth it Summary: 1 StarsIt does not import cost basis for stock trades!! I own the Deluxe version of TurboTax and upgraded to Premier for an extra 30. I've been using the software for years and find it easy to use. Definitely better than TaxCut. One thing I've always dreaded about preparing my taxes was entering investment information. You can import sales but if you have many trades it can be cumbersome to calculate cost basis and purchase dates. So I discovered that this version can import the cost basis from your broker. Well my broker (ETrade) was listed as one of the financial institutions you could import sales from but apparently they don't provide the cost basis information. You don't find this out until after you've upgraded. The whole purpose of the upgrade for me was to import cost basis, so the upgrade was a total waste of money.
Customer Review: Know what you're doing Summary: 4 StarsTurbo Tax was pretty easy to use, however, if you do not know a lot about taxes and might need some help, their phone in line had over an hour hold in early February. I can't imagine how long it would be closer to April 15. And if you email them a question, you have to wait 24-48 hours for a response, and it doesn't answer the question at all. They pick a key word and cut and paste a standard answer. I had some NUA issues and they know nothing about what it was, let alone how to report it. They also charge to efile, it was around $35 to file both federal and state. So the software combined with efiling costs matched what I paid an accountant. If you have a resource to answer questions, it works well and you can get your taxes done in a day. If you don't know much about taxes and don't know anyone who does, you probably should still have someone else do them.
