Software Reviews of TurboTax Deluxe Federal + eFile 2008 [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Beware, this product is seriously flawed! Summary: 1 StarsAfter preparing my taxes in TurboTax, I decided to have an independent tax preparer take a shot at at them too. Since I moved in 2008, I wasn't sure about moving expenses and the like. The first thing the tax preparer discovered was that TurboTax added about $13,600 to the amount reported on my only W2. I later experimented with TurboTax, and, no matter what I put for my income on the electronic W2 in TurboTax, TurboTax adds $13,600 to the amount on line 7 of the 1040 (income). TurboTax's website says one can ask for a refund only within 60 days.
Customer Review: Strange pricing strategy Summary: 3 StarsNormally a download version is cheaper than a packaged box version. And it is win-win to both the companies and the users, not mentioning the environment. However, TurboTax has a strange pricing strategy. The download version is more expensive than the packaged box version. I can't understand their strategy.
Customer Review: Change for changes sake Summary: 2 StarsTurboTax Deluxe Federal + eFile 2008
The plus is that the current version of TurboTax still imports data from last years return if you did that with TurboTax and saved it somewhere that it can be accessed. The minus is that they have made the current Deluxe edition less user friendly and apparently shoved some of the useful software into the Premier edition.
For most users, the changes from the 2007 to the 2008 version are not just cosmetic. It is much more difficult to use, it is harder to find forms and make corrections, and the software includes numerous instances where they ask that you upgrade to a more expensive verion. As an example, details concerning stock transactions that were automatically revealed in the 2007 version are not automatically revealed in the 2008 version. Instead you are asked to upgrade to the Premium edition. You can still get through the work without the upgrade, but only if you have some decent records.
Another example: If you manually entered financial data last year and this year download it from the financial institution the routine keeps the downloaded data in a new place and prompts you to enter the data again, manually. If you do so and then try to correct the obvious error, about the only solution is to start at the beginning again and overwrite everything. Really frustrating.
A perfect example of taking a good product and upgrading it to a worse product. Sort of like WindowsXp to Vista.
