Software Reviews of TurboTax Deluxe Federal + State + eFile 2008 (Old Version) [DOWNLOAD]

Customer Review: Sloppy Program
Summary: 1 Stars

No matter what I do, the little help buttons don't work. Is it FireFox? I changed to IE. Is it security software? I turned it off.
Thanks a lot TurboTax for ZERO HELP filling out my return.
Wouldn't you think they would address this and other config problems in their help menu?

Customer Review: Trouble-free experience with Turbo Tax and download
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm sure the people writing the negative reviews experienced the problems or charging experiences they reported, but add me to the list of those for whom everything was as expected with this downloaded version of Turbo Tax Deluxe 2008. When I bought the downloaded version on April 6, there was a slightly cheaper (after including shipping cost) offer for the boxed CD version, but I was running late and the extra few dollars was readily worth it for me. The $41 I paid for the download version was a savings over activating the CD Intuit sends me every year @ $59.95 plus tax.

The download was trouble free. After the quick install of the Amazon download app, the software downloaded in less than 5 minutes and installed in about the same amount of time. On startup, it downloaded all the late-March updates and the state program (for free, as promised), and I was off an running.

I've been using Turbo Tax since the mid-1980s, and I can only remember one time when I had technical issues, which I believe was when I started working on my taxes earlier than my usual last minute scramble. A positive side-effect of procrastination is that the problems and any tax law adjustments have usually been taken care of.

I had not the slightest hitch in checking for program updates. I downloaded investment data, including mutual fund sale cost basis data, and that all worked without a hitch (I don't bother to download W-2 data). The software suggested upgrading to the Premier version at a $30 premium on two different occasions, but the Deluxe version handled all my mutual fund and bond transactions without problems.

I e-filed two federal returns for free; e-filed one state return for $19.95 and mailed the other one. The first federal return was accepted in less than 24 hours. I just sent off the other federal and state e-file, but they went out without a hitch.

I've never tried any other tax software since I started with Turbo Tax in MSDOS days (before Intuit bought them), so I can't comment on whether Turbo Tax misses or finds tax savings others don't, but I've never had more than minor adjustments from the taxing authorities, and I've never had an e-filed return rejected, although in the early days I occasionally had to juggle some deductions to get my return to e-file. Our returns aren't "basic", but they are pretty straightforward.

I don't begrudge Intuit the small renewal cost, although I agree that getting a little better deal than buying new at retail each year would be appealing. I still consider the software to be a genuine bargain, and they are constantly working to improve it and keep in lock step with the tax laws, with ready access to tons of information and IRS documents.

Customer Review: 64-bit? Don't bother with the download
Summary: 1 Stars

The Amazon downloader does not work with ANY 64-bit version of Windows, so if you have a high-end computer, don't bother. And why do companies think that forcing users to install software on their PCs just to download software is a good idea? I buy apps from Palm Gear and Pocket Gear, and have never had to download anything but the software I purchased. Come on, Amazon, get a clue!!!

Customer Review: Still the best for saving money!
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree with other negative reviewers regarding giving a yearly "upgrade" option to loyal customers. Every other software works this way and I see no reason why Intuit shouldn't too. It'd definitely keep customers locked in & happy - a win-win.

But! - and this is a BIG but :) -- When I saw the pricetag for TurboTax, I balked and went over to check out the competitor, H&R Block's TaxCut. I was floored at the result. When everything was calculated, TurboTax got me a return of a whopping $1500 more than TaxCut. Now - I admit I'm not a rocket scientist - but I followed all the steps each software provided, read all the fields and entered the values asked for.

And if you check around the net, like on cNet and other online review sites, you'll see the same thing - TurboTax saved them more money than TaxCut, at least for anything more than the _most_ basic tax return.

So my overall point - TurboTax asked the right questions, and in an easy to follow, systematic way, that covered all the bases. I _hate_ doing taxes, but TT made it less painful and more profitable than the competition - by far.

So when I saw that final price tag again - which in my case was about $70 for the online version with e-file - I paid up. $1500 versus $70? Not a problem.

Customer Review: Worked fine for me!
Summary: 4 Stars

I am upset at Quickens marketing. There website says the state is additional... I bought this version today and when I got to the state it said that one state is included for free. Just like always.
The program downloaded ok (after I installed the Amazon downloader) It worked Ok... and was about the same as other years.
I don't think there marketing is doing them any good! But, I was happy with the way things turned out. If people have been tricked into paying for the state... that is just wrong.
