Software Reviews of Quicken Deluxe 2009 [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Very poor program
Summary: 2 Stars

I've been using Quicken for over a decade and this version has finally convinced me to just use my bank's online bill payment system. This version is very difficult to use and quite buggy. Previous versions were always a bit lame but were workable, this has crossed the boundary to not being useful. Setting up repeating payments, something that is at the heart of such programs often just doesn't work without playing around with the options to convince Quicken to actually allow you to set it up. If you have more than one monitor on your system it crashes every couple of minutes. The screen layout forces you to navigate through layers and layers of windows to get to what you are looking for, then makes everything a major project.

One of the really annoying "features" is that the help doesn't match the program. Things the help system says can be done, in fact cannot, menu items it mentions don't exist, etc. Apparently the help text writers didn't have access to the actual system.

Overall just what you'd expect from a company with a monopoly. Avoid it.

Customer Review: Great, really like it!
Summary: 5 Stars

This program does so much. I've always been afraid to do my own taxes but this program keeps up with everything for me and is suppose to just move right over to the tax program at the frst of the year. I am still finding things that this program will do. The only thing I wish it had was a user guide.

Customer Review: Very Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

With Microsoft Money being discontinued, I switched from it to Quicken Deluxe 2009. What a disappointment. It has been so frustrating. After far too much effort, it still didn't import my MS Money data correctly. I had to recreate almost every account. The screen painting is painfully slow. They recommend archiving data more than a year old to improve performance, which of course eliminates the ability to compare year-to-year or see the entire history of an account, payer, or payee. The application is slow. The screen refreshing is very slow. It has crashed on me several times, causing me to question reliability of my data. One of the archive functions always shuts down the application without completing the function. And on my new Vista PC, it is just runs so, so slow! The only positive thing I can think of is that the online registration with my banks accounts worked very smoothly.

Customer Review: BLOATWARE + A Nasty Forced Upgrade Practice
Summary: 1 Stars

Quicken 2009 is complete and utter bloatware, as has increasingly been the case with every version of Quicken since 2004. Coded off-shore, untested for performance bottlenecks, and riddled with rush-to-market errors that make usability a joke, it really is sad to see what a mess Quicken has become. I ordered this; installed it; it ran like a pig on my 2-yr old PC and I could not get updates from my Fidelity accounts. I ended up uninstalling it and returning it for a refund -- had to make a major stink but I got the $$$ back from the big-box store I bought it at. I reverted back to my 2006 version, and will probably just forget ever getting newer versions from now on.

Couple the shameless production of bloatware with the shameless money-grab that Intuit performs on each of us every 3 years with their forced upgrade "sunsetter" policy (potential new users, Google on that and you'll see what I'm talking about), and this product and the company behind it both deserve to die off as examples of what greed and an abusive business model end up begetting. For the few of you on here who have not had issues with Quicken, I enviously say "Congratulations' and wish you the best. For the vast majority on here who, like me, have faithfully stood by the Quicken product line for a decade or even two decades and have now decided enough is enough, all I can say is "It was nice while it lasted".

Whether you are an experienced user or one who is a new user thinking about trying Quicken 2009, my only advice is: AVOID. Maybe Quicken 2010 will be better, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
