Software Reviews of Quicken 2008 Premier [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Smooth Load - Nothing New Summary: 3 StarsI read all the comments posted w/re to Quicken 2008, and I have to tell you, I was very reluctant to up-grade from 2006. However, in light of Intuit's sunset policy and a steep discount offer, I made the plunge now vs. 2009. The upgrade took 15 minutes to load and update my over 100,000 transactions dating back to the early 90's. Also during this time I loaded Intuit's 5 now 6 software patches. I have tested most of the problems reported in all postings, and I'm happy to report all seemed fixed. Not much has changed with Premier from 2004 the first year of this version of Quicken. No new reports or significant functionality, just better graphics and tabbing. I still need to use spreadsheets for some things I like to track. Sadly, Intuit does not seem too interested in enhancements, but they seem to be pretty good in fixing bugs that slip through their initial testing and product release.
Customer Review: Don't think of switching from microsoft money Summary: 2 StarsAfter 8 years of using microsoft money for my personal accounting (and I'm still using 2003), I thought I'd try the 60 day quicken trial before upgrading to the latest version of money. The option of using it with pay pal sounded great. It's been a lot of major hassles and bugs (and thanks to all you who post, because now I know the bugs are not just me). The biggest issue for a "switcher" is that they clearly state that you can import your money files, but you can't. Apparently you could do so before by exporting and importing on an account by account basis before, but now you can't do it at all because it no longer supports it's own file type. I believe in dollar-cost averaging and have years worth of transaction that I'd have to import by hand. I know it takes a while to get used to new software, so I'll use the whole 60 days to try it, but right now I haven't found the benefits to be worth the hassle.
Customer Review: Attention eBay sellers: As of 12/31/07, PayPal downloads don't work Summary: 2 StarsFor me, the incentive to upgrade to the 2008 version was Quicken's claim that the program now supports importing PayPal transactions. As an eBay PowerSeller, that was great news.
After installing the upgrade to Quicken 2008 Home & Business, the PayPal downloads initially seemed to work fine, but now I'm rarely able to import any new transactions. Sometimes, the program will tell you the account update was successful even though no new transactions were imported (and I know there are multiple cleared transactions that should be imported). Other times, the program claims there's a Quicken server outage and suggests you try again later.
The Quicken support technician I chatted with insisted I must have a corrupted file. Ironically, creating an entirely new Quicken file and PayPal account only resulted in the same problems. Quicken now acknowledges there's an issue on their support site, but there's no information on when a fix will be available.
If you're an eBay seller hoping this is the answer to your PayPal accounting needs, I'm afraid you're in for a big disappointment. At this point, I wouldn't waste my money on an upgrade.
Customer Review: Disappointing upgrade. Summary: 3 StarsI recently upgraded Quicken (premier) 2006 to 2008. I had used 2005 before 2006 and the upgrade then went smoothly, with no noticeable problems or defects in the features. Boy was 2008 not the same. The installation was fine, but when I loaded it up, the tax section had the wrong values. After checking for upgrades, 2008 upgraded to a more recent version that specifically said it fixed a crash in the tax section. After installing it the tax section now crashed for me. Further, I noticed the scroll for the mouse didn't work everywhere, a lot of the new sections of the ui seemed to have incomplete features. I've downloaded another update which has finally fixed the Tax crash, but now help will not work. Quicken is blaming an upgrade in Windows Explorer, which I can mostly accept if it weren't for the fact that a lot of other software also uses html help and it continues to work fine. In addition I have two checking accounts, and the new savings section (which looks nice) always tells me I have insufficient funds. There is no way to specify which accounts to use for income, which is odd because it is picking up the paid bills in both accounts.
Needless to say, while the updates fixed a few issues, this seems very incomplete. I like the direction they are taking with the features, but it needs more work.
Customer Review: Quicken, next installment Summary: 4 StarsIf you are a new Quicken user, get this version and run updates as Intuit releases them to fix bugs. There are some things annoying to a previous Quicken user, but you won't know them to have that reaction. If you are an established Quicken user, and you are on v2006 or 2007, update only if you need to ... some interface changes are annoying. Overall, it works well on XP SP2 with 1GB RAM (forget their 128MB minimum -- use 512 even on Win2k, XP--1GB, VISTA -- well, its Vista). [Installation note: I've upgraded 1/2 dozen copies now, fixed another 6 attempts, and installed eight clean. Clean up your machine and registry BEFORE you do this! Take the notes about necessary MS updates VERY seriously, even where it they are only "suggested". Turn off your antivirus, anti-spyware, and firewall (AAUGH!) and the installation will be much smoother.]
