Software Reviews of Quicken 2008 Premier [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Quicken 2008 Premier Installed Seamlessly
Summary: 4 Stars

We're veteran Quicken users since its early days. When Intuit again demanded its triennial tithe to continue with online transaction feeds we read all the user complaints. The ever-eager Intuit had sent out a Q08 disk and we have grown weary of Quicken's warnings about the demise of Q05.

Relax, folks. If our upgrade experience is typical, it's a no-brainer. Just slip in the disk, pay your dues ($69.95 for Premier) and it does its upgrading - removing the old version and updating the program (in this case to Release 6). The only hiccup was Quicken's minor insistence our brokerage accounts were in Charles Schwab Bank, which of course they are not, but that's our fault in how we set them up for reasons long forgotten.

You are right, there's nothing truly dramatic and life-changing in Q08. Looks nice but all the old functionality remains. There are lots of extraneous bells and whistles and we've managed to quiet them down. The sales pitches in the new desktop icons disappear with the delete button. We have to wonder how many Intuit engineers sit around a white board trying to think up upgrade schemes no one especially needs?

Life's good after one day of downloading transactions both on investments and from Wells Fargo and Schwab. Good-bye to our backup plan of converting to MS Money. We've been running dual versions of Quicken 2005 and Money the past two months just in case the apocalypse occurred in installing Q08. Money, in our view, runs circles around Quicken on the investment side, but that's not a compelling reason to change if you're happy with Quicken.

Customer Review: Actually WORSE than 2007!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I upgraded to Premier 2007 last year. I got every update that was available, but as of Jan. 2008, I couldn't use it for longer than an hour before it would lock up and had to use the Task Manager in Windows XP to shut it down. It generally left an explorer task running at 50% of my CPU. That generally required me to reboot my machine to fix. So I read that Premier 2008 was better. I can tell you it is much worse. I no more than got it installed and spent 15 minutes looking around and it locked up just like 2007. Exactly the same behavior only it now occurs far faster. I can say without reservation that Quicken nosedived to garbage software after the 2006 version. I warn everyone to stay as far away from this software as you can get. If you want to get Quicken, buy 2006 or a prior version.

I plan to uninstall my newly perchased version and go back to 2007. At least I can get SOME work done before it locks up.

Customer Review: Lack of customer support
Summary: 1 Stars

Have been a satisfied user of the product for about 10 years, but over the last 6 months the product has a bug in downloading quotes to update your portfolio value. Numerous other people have reported the issue judging from the many complaints in the user forum an this topic. So far, Quicken has not resolved the issue and they do not appear to be listening to numerous complaints. Typical response from the help desk is, well, it is working on our end. If it happened once in a while I would not be concerned, but the issue is so frequent now and has persisted so long that it is just a big aggravation. So, if you are looking for something to keep track of your investments, you may want to look elsewhere until the issue is resolved.

Customer Review: if you're using Vista, don't count on being able to use Home Inventory
Summary: 1 Stars

I upgraded from 2005 Home & Business version on XP to Quicken Premier 2008 on Vista. The Quicken Home Inventory Manager kept crashing when I tried to add details to an inventory entry or see the details I had entered in a past entry.

I spent hours uninstalling and reinstalling per Quicken support's instructions with administrator privileges, using the special tools, reinstalling to new directory on root drive etc, and still have the same problem. A web search shows that lots of people have been having problems with a variety of bugs since installing Quicken 2008 on Vista, and especially with home inventory files.

Saw a post on the Quicken boards that I can use the free inventory software that you can download from [...] Will have to re-enter a lot of data, but at least I get to include item pictures, making it easier to clear out old crud, and it has a more pleasant and faster interface. and it's free! So save your money. Quicken did a shoddy job putting out a buggy upgrade. Don't upgrade your Quicken unless you have to because you use the Premier download features, and if you do don't count on being able to use your old inventory files.

Customer Review: Intentionally designed so features stop working after set time
Summary: 1 Stars

Every 3 years, Intuit forces users to buy the newest version or lose the ability to use the online features, such as downloading and synchronizing bank transactions. So, next year in April, the 2006 version will stop functioning online. They can call it what they want, but I call it sleazy, sleazy. Do a Google search, and you will find other lower cost options out there that don't have timebombs in them to force you to hand over your cash every few years.
