Software Reviews of Quicken 2008 Home & Business [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Crashed during initial interview Summary: 1 StarsI'm sorry to have to add my voice to the chours of boos relative to Quicken Home and Business. Intuit, the makers of Quicken, have two rock-solid products: Turbortax and Quickbooks Pro. Quicken used to be rock solid, but not anymore.
I had used Quicken from 2000 through 2005 and then gave up on it. As many reviewers have already noticed, Intuit forces you to upgrade every few years or so by eliminating the ability to download information from your bank accounts, one of the core competencies of the program. While I don't approve of that practice, I can understand why they do it, and might be okay with it if the resulting upgrades were rock solid. That's where the problem starts.
In my case, after installing Quicken Home and Business 2008 on my Windows Vista SP1 machine, I went through the initial interview (part of "Express Setup"), which is necessary to get going in Quicken. Everything goes fine, including Quicken's ability to recognize my bank and the several accounts I have there, until I click "finish" the interview. Then Quicken invariably crashes. The cause is a crash in the MSVCR80.dll, which is part of Microsoft's C++ Runtime Libaray, and an essential component of Microsoft Office, among others. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and repairing my Quicken installation. I have tried running as an Administrator and with UAC controls turned off. Nothing.
I then searched for answers on Intuit's website. Nothing on MSVCR80.dll. I tried phone support, but they're only available during business hours, and this happened Saturday morning. I tried live chat, and was not able to connect with their service. I tried it a day later and was able to connect with their service but not with an agent, as their service simply disconnected me before an agent ever came on. Repeatedly.
So here it is, the same verdict, by the way as delivered by PC Magazine: I could live with Quicken forcing you to upgrade if the resulting application were rock solid.
I could live with it if Quicken was fast.
I could live with it if Quicken was stable.
I could live with it if Quicken connected seemlessly to my bank and downloads always worked.
I could live with it if Quicken was not a resource hog.
However, to force clients to upgrade and then provide a product that is such bloatware and so unruly that you can't geven get past the initial interview? That, my friends, is inexcusable.
